2019.7.30 DCC SEA PADDLE ROA ISLAND

“7 kayaks set off from the lifeboat station on Roa Island,with Rob leading the way. The low tide meant quite a long carry over the stony beach. Although the sky was threatening, it mostly remained dry. We passed Piel, & continued round to Bass Pool. There Geoff & Jamie both practised tipping out & re-entry. We then continued south along the S Walney coast. We were rewarded by being escorted by about a dozen seals, who played at diving just in front or behind our boats. Flocks of oyster-catchers took off & filled the sky. Heading north, we came ashore on Piel for a drink & a bite, making use of the tables outside the Ship Inn. We aimed off to counter the incoming tide as we crossed the shipping channel, & were soon back at the lifeboat station.”

2019.7.26 dcc sea/touring chapel island

7 of us met at Cooper lane car park Bardsea. The tide was a small 7m neap tide.
After a shot trolley and carry to the water we set of to chapel island. This island was used in times gone by as a safe refuse for people crossing the Leven estuary. As it's name suggests there was once a chapel here.
We passed on the outside of the island then headed to Plumpton rail viaduct. As we passed under the viaduct all was calm. Normally when we pass under on bigger tides, there is a roaring as the incoming tide squeezes between the pillars causing waves and whirlpools
We then stopped for a short snack break before heading back on the beautiful silvery calm sea back to the cars.

The weather was ideal this evening and the session well attended with many going out in kayaks to explore the docks. The rest went out on SUP boards where they put their skills to the test. This was captured by Fran.

2019.7.24 DCC BARROW & DISTRICT SOCIETY FOR THE BLIND

These are pictures taken to day of a session that DCC Coach Carol led for a great bunch of folk.

Carol said "On Wednesday 24th July Duddon Canoe club ran a session for a group of visually impaired adults. We were contacted by Claire Huddleston the vision support team officer from Barrow blind society. Conditions were good and 8 paddlers had a trip on the dock with support from 5 club coaches and 2 members on shore. The majority of the paddlers would like to come again and some have enquired about becoming members. Thanks to all who helped to make it a good experience."

Claire Huddleston kindly said "A special thank you from everyone at Barrow & Districts Society for the Blind for this afternoon. The understanding of local sports clubs allows for our clients to undertake new activities. Our members thoroughly enjoyed themselves and I think you may have some new members coming along on Friday which just highlights the dedication and understanding of your coaches"

This evening while the cubs were drying out it was the turn of the Scouts to board the 8 person SUP board and take to the polo courts. A great time was had by all. Its been a busy time for DCC coaches and helpers over this past week but its been all worth while when you see how much fun these youngsters have had.

This evening started with a local pack of cubs coming down to the docks for an evening of fun playing polo and trying out the 8 person SUP board. All who attended this evening had a great time.

This evening a pack of local cubs came down to the docks and had a fantastic time out on the water. A group paddled out on the large 8 person SUP board and others out in tandem canadians before swapping to give everyone a chance on the SUP. Later on a few even had a go at successfully paddling lightnings. All of this was followed by a BBQ cooked by a few cubs and their scout leader. All enjoyed the evening especially as the weather and conditions were just right.

2019.7.14 DCC FUN DAY

Early Sunday morning saw members of DCC down at the docks getting ready to welcome families and folk from around the area to the yearly DCC fun day aimed at giving everyone a chance to try out different types of boats and stand up paddleboards(SUP's) Every year as we try to put up the gazebo's we say we are going to label the poles but we never do so we all spend a good half hour of so working out which bit goes where. It just adds to the fun of the day, especially if its windy. We had just got everything sorted when the first of our visitors started to arrive and then none us stopped again until about 5:00pm when everything was tided up and put away. Inbetween 10am and the end of the day everyone who visited the docks said how much they had enjoyed them selves on and off the water saying what a great time they'd had. When not on the water there were games to play, raffles to win and plenty of great cakes, hot dogs and quiches to fortify everyone at which point many took to the water again and spent the day with us. "After a hectic but wonderful day on Sunday I wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a massive success.
First of all to our coaches, who once again gave up their time to ensure we could get every person who wanted to try paddling out on the water. It was incredibly busy and you did an amazing job of keeping everyone safe and happy.
To all those who helped with stalls, face painting and serving endless drinks and snacks, well done! I don't think I've ever seen so.many hot dogs disappear so fast, they were certainly a hungry crowd. The face paints looked brilliant, and I saw plenty of fishing, colouring and prize winning going on. Our younger members did a fantastic job of helping out where they could, and it was lovely to see them so enthusiastic!
To everyone else who helped by setting up, baking cakes, packing up and clearing away at the end and who shared and helped publicise the event, thank you too.
It takes a huge team effort to make days like this happen, and we couldn't do.it without each and every one of you.
The main aim of the fun day is to attract more people to paddle sports and let them know what we do here at DCC. We only ever aim to cover the Cost of running the day. That said I'm really pleased to say that, even after expenses, we have also.managed to raise around £200 towards club funds!!

2019.7.10 DCC CUBS

Wednesday evening saw 28 cubs arrive at the docks intent on having a great time. They weren't disappointed. After fun and games on land and a saftey briefing they split into three groups and all took to the water in tandem canoes or on the 8 person SUP board. During their time on the water they all managed to get a turn on the SUP. All enjoyed the evening.
