2019.8.25 dcc race day training

25/8/2019

12 aspirant race paddlers and a number of helpers and hangers on turned out for a great day of race training. We practiced paddling technique with wings and had a go on the paddle ergo in the morning.
After food and a drink we were back on the water doing 500m time trials - some tested a variety of boats and paddles to try to find the best kit for the fastest time.
The day finished with a 1 or 2 km time trial. The aim of the time trials is to set a personal time so you can judge your future  progress. The 500m time is also used to select  the entry division in marathon races.
A special thanks to the helpers for safety cover, sorting kit and especially putting everything away at the end of the day.
Next marathon 22nd Sept. Lancaster canal.

DCC member Sheila Mitton attended the viewing of Vitamin Sea in Barrow. Cal Major paddled through Barrow last year on her way to John O'Groats.

I went to a viewing of Vitamin Sea with Cal Major. The film is about her stand up paddle boarding from Land`s End to John O`Groats last year. On her journey Cal met some great people who shared her passion for the ocean and for caring for it. Cal talked us through the ups and downs of the journey and also about the healing that takes place in nature and the healing from caring for nature, her passion was and is to highlight and reduce plastic pollution and also link this with mental health. Cal did a heartfelt and honest question and answer session. It was an honor to meet her and also meet other people from around Barrow who care about our seas. A truly inspirational evening.

2019.8.21 DCC FAMILY PADDLE CONISTON

Conditions on leaving Ulverston were windy and everyone was uncertain if the paddle from Brown How Coniston would go ahead but we were all pleasantly surprised when on arriving at the lake it was fairly calm. The family paddle was well attended by regulars, new members and the sea/touring group. We paddled round the south end of the lake with the touring group splitting off towards Allan Tarn. We carried on and found a place to stretch our legs before having a brew. Although it was wet it didnt dampen anyones spirits. As usual a great time was had by all.

The weather was a bit windy tonight but it didnt stop anyone from getting out on the water. Folks went out in kayaks and sup boards this evening with a bunch of new members who participated in the Barrow & District Society for the Blind session a few weeks ago joining Coach Andy for trip around the docks on the 8 person SUP. Despite jumping up and down several times they all managed to stay on board. As usual a great time was had by all.

On Tuesday afternoon 6 lads along with two leaders paid a visit to the docks. All enjoyed their first time on and in the water paddling kayaks. Conditions weren't ideal for the SUP boards but that didnt stop anyone from having fun. A brilliant time was had by a great bunch of youngsters. They were all invited back to try the SUP another day. Full album in the gallery.

Plenty of folk took to the water this evening and so three groups were formed. One group went to explore the large vessel that had entered the dock earlier that day while others either went to the bulls nose for games or did marathon practice. All groups enjoyed their paddle.
