WWR – wildwater racing. Sprint and classic events.
There are 3 levels of competition, Wavehopper, Regional, National.
The club attends wavehoppper / regional races.
Wavehopper – WH - races are entry level events for novices and improvers and are raced in Wavehopper or GP (general purpose) boats. The Wavehopper series of races culminate in the finals in September. National age group champions are determined from the best 3 results during the season added to the finals results. The club competition is calculated from the best 6 paddlers at 3 races plus the finals. Events are usually on grade 2 rivers.
Regional races are usually run in conjunction with WH races, composite boats may also be used. Results are added to the national results tables with 1st place getting 2000 points. We usually attend races on grade 2 rivers but some regional races are on grade 3/4 rivers.
National races are for experienced racers on grade 3/4 rivers. There are 5 national races pa. and results are added to the national results tables with 1st place getting 6000 points. Attendance is up to the individual paddlers.
The best 5 races determine the final placing on the national results table.
Marathon – We are in the North West Hasler league for marathon racing.
There are 5 clubs and 6 races in the league from May to September. The top 2 clubs are invited to the Hasler finals in October. You must have completed 3 races to be eligible for the finals. The Marathon National Champs. are open to all. We also attend races run by Pennine CC.
There are 9 divisions and you can race K1 or K2, promotion is on time irrespective of age or sex. Div. 9,8,7 race over 6km, Div .6,5,4 – 12km with portage and Div. 3,2,1 - 18 km with portage.
For the U12 and U10 juniors there is a separate competition using Lightening junior race kayaks. There is a North West lightening league and individual competition. Lightenings can attend Hasler finals and national champs. irrespective of the clubs placing.
Sprint- Five National sprint regattas are held at Nottingham monthly from May. Races are over 200m, 500m, 1000m. Entry into a regatta is determined by 500m time trial results. You would expect to be in Div 6 marathon. We have not attended these as a club so far. These are two day events.
We intend to go to one regatta this year taking under 12 juniors to race in lightening K1 . K2 + K4 rocket.
There are also regattas held in the Scottish lowlands - these are less formal than the National regattas at Nottingham and run over one day
Time trials – we run 500m time trails at the club and calculate 1000m times from race results.
Slalom – the slalom divisions are 4,3,2,1, elite.
We attend 2 or 3 Div. 3/4 races each year and train occasionally at Greenodd.
A few members have been promoted to Div 3 and it is hoped they may attend 3 or 4 weekend events over the year.
Polo - Over the year 3 different club members have offered to take on running polo but with no result. We have the kit at the docks but conditions at not good. The pool have given us permission to try it there. We need to spend about £200 to make the boats legal for polo. Members seem to enjoy the occasional friendly game. The is a local league but there has not been support from within the club to join. Lakeland CC at Kendal specialize in polo and some of our members go there in order to develop their skills and get regular practice.
BOATS
The club has specialist boats for WWR, slalom, marathon and sprint.
These provide members the opportunities to take part in the events without needing their own specialist boats. We will allocate boats according to ability and aspirations but members should not expect sole use of club equipment.
Race entry
Each discipline has different regulations for race entry – Adults usually need to be BCU / CE members. Juniors are ok with the white Canoe England club cards for entry level divisions but may need individual membership for higher divisions. For some competitions the club ‘team leader’ is required to send in all club entries.
